Fort Berens roots trace back 150 years to a Hudson’s Bay Company trading post named Fort Berens that was established on their property. It was to serve the thousands of prospectors who flocked to Lillooet in search of gold. On this historic site they have now built Fort Berens Estate Winery. With the same pioneering spirit they are forging a new wine region.
The climate in the region is very dry with hot summer temperatures: Lillooet is often the ‘hotspot’ in Canada. the vineyard is planted on sagebrush-covered bench land on the Fraser River, beneath the towering Coast Mountain range. Alpine breezes bring a cool end to hot summer days, while the afternoon sun lingers over our vines. Sandy soil, arid summers, and moderate winters provide ideal conditions for growing premium grapes.
The now mature 20 acre vineyard, planted in 2009, contains six grape varietals, including: Riesling, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot.
Fort Berens aim to craft premium-quality, terroir-driven wines that focus on single varietals from single vine-yards. Their winemaking style is to produce elegant and well balanced wines, with expressions of fresh fruit. Fort Berens wines are best enjoyed with good food and great company.
